Protests Against Police Brutality: On August 9, 2014, Michael Brown was shot and death, in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Michael Brown, an 18-year-old man, died after being shot at least six times by Darren Wilson, 28 a Ferguson police officer. Michael Brown was unarmed and had no criminal record. According to Ferguson police, Brown was a suspect in a robbery committed minutes before the shooting, although the initial contact between Wilson and Brown was unrelated to the robbery. Wilson has served four years with the Ferguson Police Department and two years with another local police department. He had no disciplinary history.
The incident sparked unrest in Ferguson, largely due to questions of racism, since Brown was African American, while Wilson is white. Peaceful protests, vandalism, and other forms of social unrest have continued for more than a week, with night curfew being imposed and escalated violence. Widespread media coverage examined the trend of local police departments arming themselves with "military-grade weapons" and responding in a military fashion when dealing with protesting civilians and journalists covering volatile current events.
People in more than 90 cities around the country took to the streets on Thursday to protest the police shooting of an unarmed African-American teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. Here’s a collection of pictures from people who support Michael Brown.
Eric Garner, a 43-year-old father of six, can be seen arguing with plainclothes NYPD officers on Staten Island. When the officers attempt to handcuff him, Garner asks them not to touch him, and one puts him in a chokehold. Several other officers pile on, slamming Garner into the ground, and he begins complaining that he can't breathe. Now, Eric Garner is dead.
Police allege they saw Garner selling illegal untaxed cigarettes, but witnesses at the scene say he was stopped because he broke up a fight. Either way, the psychological distress the encounter caused him is evident before the cops even lay their hands on him. "Every time you see me, you try to mess with me," he says to the cops at one point. "This stops today."
